The Allegheny West Foundation Community Thrift Store is housed inside what used to be a PNC Bank Branch. Ron Hinton, President and CEO of AWF, which is a 501-C3 nonprofit organization,
Brokered an agreement w/top executives of PNC Bank years ago, to get that branch site at 2236 W. Hunting Park Avenue, as a donation to AWF, when PNC Bank closed that branch.
Ron Hinton then created the AWF TastyKake Thrift Store, that eventually became known as The Allegheny West Community Thrift Store.
With this venture, AWF has been able to make 4 things happen every year:
1. The store offers part time jobs for teenagers from the community.
2. The store offers part time or full time jobs for a few adults from the community.
3. The store helps earn revenue to fuel other AWF Community Projects.
4. The store is a place where area residents and others from around the city come and purchase discount TastyKake products, and all varieties of other products from discounted loafs of bread, to popular brands of snack foods, to juice, water, soda, cleaning products, toilet paper, paper towels and more.
The AWF Community Thrift Store is also known for selling many of the “back in the day” candies that baby boomers still love to snack on, such as squirrel nuts, Mary Janes, peanut chews, pickled eggs and picketed pig feet!
